Meet The Doctor – Auto Doctor That Is

Doctors are those kind of people that everyone looks up to and respects. When someone comes in the room and says “I’m a doctor”, suddenly he commands more respect and attention with his declaration. When I say I’m an auto mechanic, people look at me like I’m an average Joe. Well sure, I’ve got nothing against that, but I guess it would be really cool if I can impress people the way doctors do.

What people don’t realize is that us auto mechanics are just like doctors. An auto mechanic standing under the car. When someone comes in with a defective car, we immediately take a look at the whole picture, and analyze what’s wrong. We develop our own diagnosis, fix what can be fixed, give advice to the customer about all sorts of problems pertaining to their car parts, make friends with them, and even give them information on how to obtain cheaper auto insurance plans based on their vehicle. In a summary, we replace what needs to be replaced.

As auto mechanics, we’re usually faced with the direst of problems. Just like patients come to doctors only when they’re really sick, people bring their cars in only when it’s in dire need of repair. Instead of coming in for preventive measures such as regular tune-ups and maintenance, people bring in their cars when their engines start making weird sounds or when their cars just won’t start up anymore. The worst thing is, people think we can fix their car problems in a flash. Since cars are machines, there’s certainly some way to fix it up in a day right? Well, that’s what you think.

Just like a doctor would tell their patients to come in for a regular check up, I tell people to bring in their cars for a regular tune-up. The problem is, people are so non-compliant with taking care of themselves, they purposely forget to have regular check ups. As an auto mechanic, hoping for people to bring in their cars regularly for a tune up is like waiting for the first man to land on the sun. It’s just not happening.

Even so, I keep my faith in mankind. With every customer who brings in his defective car to the shop, I still tell him about the importance of regular car maintenance. Sure, it will probably be another year until I see the guy again, but I still hope for the best. To everyone else who’s reading this, give your car a regular check up. And no, I’m not just trying to make the most of your dollars. More on that later.
